The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. In 1887, the Newberry Library was started by Newberry estate trustees E. W. Blatchford and W. H. Bradley. Chicago lawyer and civic leader. Horace Oakley was born in Prescott, Wisconsin on June 2, 1861. He received a law degree from National University in Washington, D.C. in 1881 and then studied literature at the University of Michigan.
