In 1887, the Newberry Library was started by Newberry estate trustees E. W. Blatchford and W. H. Bradley. On April 13, 1892, the Library was organized under Illinois law with a governing board of thirteen trustees, who met April 25, 1892, and formally accepted the Charter of Incorporation. Chicago lawyer and civic leader. Horace Oakley was born in Prescott, Wisconsin on June 2, 1861. He received a law degree from National University in Washington, D.C. in 1881 and then studied literature at the University of Michigan. He then returned to Chicago to practice law and was admitted to the bar in 1883. Soon afterwards he became associated with the firm of Ball and Oakley which eventually became Wood and Oakley.
